Birchbox UK June 2016 “Paradise Found” Review!

Hi my lovelies,

First and foremost, I’d like to apologise about the lateness of this post – we’re almost in June! I had hoped to get this up a while back when I first got my box, but a dilemma with a broken eyeshadow has pushed this review back until now! Everything has been sorted, and while I have few good things to say about the Birchbox customer service, It’s still an OK box for me this month.

June’s box theme is ‘Paradise Found’, and has lots of products on offer that will sort you for summer. I love how Birchbox have redesigned their boxes this month into a handy drawer, and hope they stick with this in the future as it’s now so much more convenient to store things in! The box came in two designs this month, and I love the little pineapples on mine!

So what was in my box this month?

  • Jelly Pong Pong – Paradise Pigment in Fig Jam

20160624_205511-vert

When I first saw the name of this in my little booklet, I assumed this was an eyeshadow pigment, which I thought was a little strange as that meant there were two eyeshadows in my box this month. Despite the confusing name, this is actually a great little lip and cheek duo, and works as both a lip colour and a blush. I love the shade I received, Fig Jam, as it’s such a pretty fuschia-mauve shade that’s super versatile and flattering on my skin tone. A note to others (and myself): only the tiniest amount is needed as blush as it’s soooo pigmented, unless you want to look like a drag queen! My one irk about this is the scent, It’s a little too perfumey for me personally and stays with you through the day, which makes this a little hard to wear for me as it makes me headachey. This is a full size product, and retails for £17.95 (Seriously!!! Okay that’s super expensive for this)

  • Percy & Reed – Reassuringly Firm Session Hold Hairspray

I have spent  so long looking for a hairspray that doesn’t irritate my sensitive scalp, and the closest one I’ve found is L’Oreal Elnette before now. This hairpray from Percy & Reed is the only one I’ve ever used that doesn’t dry out and make my scalp really itchy and irritated in the slightest, and for me that’s a win! This holds really well, and doesn’t give that tin man crunchiness you get with some hairsprays. The way I style my hair I only need to use a little, so this handbag friendly size will last me ages! This is a travel size spray, and the full size is £12.

  • Absolution – Le Nettoyant Purete Cleanser

I’m on the fence a little with this cleanser. While I do like it a lot better than the micellar water I received from this brand in a previous box, it’s nothing to shout home about. It does do as it claims by being super gentle and not making my skin feel tight after I use this, but I already have a cleanser from Liz Earle that works better, and that one doesn’t cost £26 for the full size. I do like it however, but I won’t be purchasing the full sized product.

  • POP Beauty – POP Portfolio Eyeshadow Trio in Peach Parfait

This little lovely is the reason this post is so late this month! I was super excited to receive my box, but this had been broken in transit and I’m pretty lucky that it didn’t explode over my whole box! It took a while to get a new one, but I’m glad I did because this little trio is super cute and really great quality. They’re really soft (probably why mine was broken), and more pigmented than I expected! I wish there was a matte shade in the trio as they’re all shimmers, but overall I’m really pleased with this! There are ten shades in the full product, and it retails for £15.5o

  • Vita Liberata – Fabulous Self Tanning Gradual Lotion

20160624_205304.jpg

This last product is the big letdown of this box for me. I’m not and never have been a fake tan user so this is completely useless to me. I can’t comment about how good it is (other than I know Vita Liberata is  one of the most popular high quality brands) because I’ll never ever use this. This will get passed on to a friend who will use this, but I’m super disappointed to get this as I am so pale that even the palest fake tans looks dirty or orange on me. It’s a shame as there were SPF’s and sun cream products on offer this month and i would have loved to get one of those because I burn really easily. This is a large sample (which is always good), and the full size retails for £15

What’s the verdict?

Overall, not the worst box in the world, but Birchbox is going to have to step up its game to get me to keep my subscription after a few months that have been a little less than I expect from them. I love the hairspray and the shadow trio, and I can’t wait to use them more, and the pigment would be amazing if not for the scent. But the tan is especially useless to me and I’m not running out to get the cleanser either. I reckon next month’s box is going to be a good un’ though, as it promises a full size John Frieda hair product, and an LOC lipgloss stick from Millie Mackintosh!
